CNE High School Families,

Beginning today, all in-person students will begin reading Just Mercy by Brian Stevenson as part of our “One Book, One School Project”.  The book details Mr. Stevenson’s work defending death row inmates.  Copies of the novel were purchased using funds from the Comprehensive State Literacy Development Grant the High School received.

Through this project we are hoping to strengthen our school community through a shared literacy experience and demonstrate that literacy is not limited to just English class.  As your child reads the book there may be parts that they do not agree with or relate to.  However, I think many of the book’s themes can and will resonate with our students.  Personally, I thought Mr. Stevenson did an excellent job conveying that regardless of background, we may have had similar or shared experiences, and the power of hope and empathy.
Students will complete activities related to the book in all classes over the course of the next four weeks.  Additionally, on April 30th speakers from the University of Cincinnati’s Innocence Project will discuss some of the legal aspects presented in the novel during assemblies with students.

Through the Literacy Grant, we have been able to secure copies of Just Mercy for families as well.  If you have time, we would encourage you to read it along with your child.  Throughout the week we will post optional discussion questions for families on the High School’s Facebook and Twitter.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
